Simple and Quick Procedure:
Tools needed:
Shannon burr and color coded sizers
Step One:
The skin incision is the surgeon's choice. Following exposure, the extensor digitorum longus tendon is released exposing the proximal phalanx head.
Step Two:
After arthroplasty, a Shannon burr is used to drill a hole into the proximal phalanx stump and the intermediate phalanx. The drilling depth of the hole is significant because this creates the arthroplasty space which is then maintained by the implant.
Step Three:
The implant is sized and placed across
the
arthroplasty site and positioned into the drilled holes. If the rod is too long, either the implant is modified by trimming or the holes are deepened by drilling.
Step Four:
After repairing the skin, a 2x2 betadine
soaked gauze is then wrapped gently around the toe making
sure the wrap is not too firm.
